The brief
MSD oncology representatives were spending significant time manually distributing case studies to healthcare professionals (HCPs) across NHS trusts. The process was inefficient - case studies weren't centralised, making it laborious for HCPs to find relevant studies to help their patients. The MSD brand team wanted a digital hub solution where case studies would be easily accessible to HCPs directly via NHS computers, encouraging collaboration between trusts through shared treatment insights.
What did I do?
I conducted user interviews with MSD Key Account Managers and representatives to understand the current case study workflow from conception to delivery. Through research, I discovered that case studies weren't standardised, users had low technical efficiency, and HCPs relied heavily on colleague recommendations rather than centralised resources.
I developed a webapp solution optimised for NHS computer constraints - low processing power and strict security requirements. The design featured minimal branding to reduce load times, a simple filtering system by region/indication/pathway, and a two-tier content structure separating promotional and educational materials. I created wireframes progressing from low to mid-fidelity, as the MSD team required detailed visual concepts to understand the solution.
Multiple design iterations were tested with target users, focusing on simplicity for the older user demographic while incorporating MSD's brand identity through strategic use of their illustration palette.
What was the outcome
The final user testing showed a 20% increase in collaboration between NHS trusts for the Phase 1 launch. The platform successfully centralised case studies, making them easily discoverable through location-based filtering. MSD launched Phase 1 with their representatives for formal testing, with Phase 2 development underway to enhance collaborative features and build long-term trust relationships between MSD and healthcare professionals.
The solution transformed a manual, time-intensive process into an accessible digital platform that improved information sharing across the UK's oncology network.
